This year’s World Thalassemia Day saw the Thalassemia Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) express their gratitude to the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Gandhi Hospital for their unwavering commitment to thalassemia children. The department, headed by Prof Dr. K. Nagarjuna, has provided indispensable splenectomy services for young patients requiring blood transfusions.

The TSCS President, Mr. Chandrakant Agarwal, and CEO & Secretary, Dr. Suman Jain, applauded the exceptional work of the pediatric surgeons at Gandhi Hospital. They cited the hospital’s innovative “Children Play Den” concept, which provides a nurturing and stimulating post-operative environment for thalassemia children, as another example of the hospital’s dedication to patient care.

In the past three years, the Department of Paediatric Surgery has successfully carried out 40 splenectomies on thalassemia children, while Prof Dr. K. Nagarjuna has personally performed 70 such operations. These procedures are critical for patients with high blood transfusion needs and numerous health challenges.

In light of these accomplishments, the TSCS leadership urged the government of Telangana to recognize Gandhi Hospital’s Department of Paediatric Surgery for their excellent healthcare services and dedication to safe splenectomy procedures for thalassemia children.
